First, let’s clear up a misnomer.
Most of us have heard of TMJ and believe it to be a disorder of the jaw. That’s partially correct. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. There are two of these joints ( TMJs) — one on either side of the face working in harmony as the jaw moves up and down. However, the jaw disorders that we sometimes talk about are actually TMDs, or Temporomandibular Disorders. TMD, and the dysfunction that results, can produce significant pain and impairment. What causes TMD is not 100 percent clear. But it’s believed that symptoms develop when there are problems with the jaw muscles or the joints themselves. Nicosia Dental is skilled at diagnosing TMD and treating TMD.
