Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, attacks the gum and the bone that support the teeth.
(In fact, the word periodontal literally means “around the tooth.”) Four out of five people have some form of this gum disease. It is the number one cause of tooth loss and has been linked to increased risk for other diseases elsewhere in the body, such as stroke, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes red gums, swollen gums, and bleeding gums — however, there is usually little or no discomfort. Often caused by poor oral hygiene, gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.
Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. Plaque below the gum line contains bacteria that produce toxins which irritate the gums. Inflammation occurs, and the tissue and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed.
This can be very serious stuff. Expect the Nicosia Dental staff to vigilantly look for, diagnose, monitor, and treat this condition.
